In October of 2020, at the age of 51, my husband Randy King, was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Our world was turned upside down. After days of shock and devastation, we met with our surgeon to discuss surgery to remove the tumor. The surgeon said Randy was young and healthy otherwise and gave us hope. She said, “You are not the average bear”. We decided that was our mantra and we ran with it. After six months of chemotherapy, he had a successful Whipple procedure, and all margins came back clear. We were elated, he had beaten the beast! She was right, he wasn’t your average bear!
Six months later, a spot showed on his scan. We were devastated to learn the cancer had returned. He underwent chemotherapy again and battled with all he had. Sadly, on September 4, 2022, Randy lost his battle. He was the strongest, bravest person I have ever known. Randy never complained and faced the cancer with such positivity and optimism. He was my hero and the love of my life.
My Brother-in-Law coined our support as “King’s Army” and an army it was! Randy, the kids and I were completely blown away with the generosity, love, support and prayers we received.
The support we received was so tremendous, I can’t even begin to put into words everything friends, family, co-workers, teammates, schoolmates near and far did for us. Throughout this journey we always said we wanted to do something to give back. The day of Randy’s funeral, a dear friend pulled me aside and said he wanted to start an annual golf tournament in Randy’s name. I absolutely loved this idea! Randy loved to golf and always loved spending time with friends on the golf course. He said we could donate the money to whatever I chose to do with it. After careful thought, we decided to start a scholarship fund. This would be our way of giving back!
Cancer can destroy so many things. It can destroy you physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, spiritually, and the list goes on. There were many conversations over our worries of sending the kids to college. We don’t want that to be a worry for someone, when there are so many other things to deal with when facing a cancer diagnosis. The Not Your Average Bear Foundation Scholarship will be awarded to a student in Williamson County whose family has been affected by cancer.
Not Your Average Bear's mission is to provide a college scholarship for a student, in Williamson County, whose family has been affected by cancer.
